Re-Districting Plan

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC
October 10, 2022

The Mabton School District is in the process of redistricting its board member districts.

Every ten years, after each U.S. Census is completed, school districts must review the boundaries of their board of director districts to ensure equitable geographic representation.  Mabton School District is divided into three geographic regions or districts, plus two non-geographic bound "at-large" positions. Candidates for school board positions must run for the seat of the director district they live in, or for one of two at-large positions. By creating three equal director districts, geographic diversity is ensured on the school board. Each position is elected by all district voters, so each of the five directors represents the entire district in their board actions.

In September 2022, the District contracted with Sammamish Data Systems to develop a proposal for new director district boundaries based on the latest census data. Since the last realignment of director districts there has been some shift in population growth that requires us to make boundary adjustments.

The proposed legal description and maps were presented to the School Board this fall during a study work session.  To complete this process, the Board will hold a public hearing, followed by passing a resolution reflecting their decision to accept (or not accept) the proposed boundary adjustments.

The Mabton Board of Directors will hold a public hearing regarding the Re-Districting Plan on October 24, 2022 at 6 pm in the Mabton High School Library.  The Regular monthly Board Meeting will follow the public hearing.
